As former prime minister Theresa May can attest, coughing can afflict anyone at any time, so perhaps unsurprisingly its also a common cause of anxiety on behalf of patients about to undergo eye surgery.

Though people worry about coughing or sneezing, in reality its really quite rare for a patient to need to cough or sneeze during the procedure. In fact where a patient develops the urge to cough or sneeze they are nearly always able to give the surgeon a little warning so that coughing/ sneezing can be made entirely safe.

So, understandably a concern but in reality something that we as surgeons do not encounter very often and where we do our advance preps with the patient allows coughing / sneezing to take place when its perfectly safe.
